Spinning some burning steel wool around on the end of a rope is popular as a way to create dazzling long exposure photographs. It can also be used for dazzling video as well.

Photographer Richie Johnston created the video above by capturing a woman spinning steel wool in a forest and then reversing the footage. It’s titled “Ignition Sequences.”

This reminds me of when I was a little boy and we didn’t have money for fireworks on the Fourth of July. Once it got dark, we would stick steel wool on the end of a coat hanger and swing it around. I wonder if kids do that anymore.

First reaction from someone who grew up west of the dry line — “Who’s holding the damn hose?” Looked fairly lush and green, but those scattering sparks are still nervous-making.
